Polonnaruwa is a destination that creates a spectacular view of the greenery at a glance. This territory with ancient Sri Lankan irrigation industries is inhabited by villagers who still lead an agricultural life to this day. This Polonnaruwa area was chosen as the capital by the regime after the collapse of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, the original kingdom of Sri Lanka. Therefore, history has confirmed the establishment of this kingdom as the second realm of Sri Lanka, which was established in the tenth century AD.

State power in Sri Lanka was also seized by a group of Indian invaders in the 10th century. Later, the capital city of Anuradhapura, which was about 1,500 years old, was abandoned under the dominance of these invaders. Eventually, they established Polonnaruwa as the capital. The reason for this was that the prudent kings who ruled the kingdom of Anuradhapura in the past had already designed colossal irrigation projects with reservoirsand anicuts with the intention of prosper agriculture. Therefore, this territory is a glimpse of a beauty that is greenish and rich in prosperity.

In the formerly stages, kings of Indian descent ruled for about sixty years, making Polonnaruwa their capital. Later, a local prince named Vijayabahu the first defeated the Indian invaders and was re-anointed as a local king. Polonnaruwa has been the kingdom of Sri Lanka for about three hundred years since then.

It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982 due to its archaeological value and the uniqueness of its use of technology and specialized knowledge.

The way in which ancient irrigation technology has been used for sustainability in the past is astounding. Being able to take advantage of it today only intensifies the value here. The main object that catches the eye to provide evidence of this is the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka name Parackrama Sea.
